It's Washington against the world!Posted by Jeff Gordon in Untagged |

OK. Here is my first shot at this blog thing. This industry is amazing. There are 650 wineries in Washington. For the most part, we only compete in the retail arena. We support each other. No matter what we like to think, we are chasing other regions in the world for attention, for acceptance, for respect, for all the things that will make us the number 1 wine region in the world. We have to support each other!
I have found that for the most part if you travel as little as 200 miles outside the State, nobody cares about different regions in the Washington. They care about what they can sell to their customers.
I think for the most part we have done a good job presenting that quality. I have seen in the past couple of years an actual Washington section in wine shops outside the Northwest. We have made great inroads in the market place, but we have so far to go.
What is great is that we have the perfect place to grow wine. Our biggest limitation is ourselves. We have all the natural ingredients to grow great grapes. We just have to be better at it and to discover the right grape for our vineyards.
How long have they been doing this in France? I think we have come a long way in the last 30 years!

for the most part... "For the most part", I think Jeff is the best Ambassador for Washington Wine there is! But I have been married to this amazing grape grower for nearly 40 years! Way to go, Honey! |

Mr I have done a bit of traveling this spring (AZ, MI, FL) and I continue to be disappointed with the general lack of WA wines found on shelves. I introduce them to friends wherever I go, and everyone is always blown away! I hope the "Big Boys" from WA continue to put out a good product, because that's about all you can find out there, and the perception of WA wines is formed by impressions of those few wines. Keep on pluggin' Jeff. Sooner or later, the word will get out! |
