Vintage

Unusual conditions during the growing season led to exceptional quality grapes for Gordon Brothers in 1999. Spring and summer were fairly cool, while September turned extremely hot. Those conditions allowed our reds to gain tremendous flavor intensity while retaining a full structure. We harvested the Syrah from our estate vineyard in the last week of September.

Winemaking

After crushing, yeast was added and we monitored the alcoholic fermentation and pumped over the must two to three times a day in order to extract all the pigments and flavors from the skin of the berries. Upon completion of this process, the wine was pressed and racked into barrels. We used mostly French oak and a small portion of American oak during the 16 months aging process.

Winemaker Comments

A beautiful dark purple in color, our 1999 Syrah has delicious aromas of violet, blackberry, and red cherry. Fun and fruit-forward flavors of candy, black currant and spice provide the mouth with a friendly and dense personality. Chewy tannins balanced with fruit and oak affords our Syrah a great aging potential.
